Main Excuses For Not Exercising and How to Deal With Them

In today's world less and less time is spent on our health. Exercising has become a very small priority in many of our lives. We all know that we should exercise and while many of us want to, we feel that exercise just simply would not fit into our current life style for various reasons.

Exercise is particularly important when trying to lose weight. I bet you know this and the other benefits of exercise as well as the next person. We all do. However, the majority of people continue to either do the least amount of exercise they can or simply do none at all. If we all know the benefits, then why are we not doing enough exercise?

Let's consider four common excuses and what we can do about them.

No Time to Exercise?

This is one of the main reasons for lack of exercise. However, it is not about the amount of time we have available but how we use it. Look at what your do on a daily basis.

Could you get up half an hour earlier and fit something in?

How about the hour or so spent watching TV in the evening? Could you instead try out a new fitness DVD that's caught your eye?

It's all about priorities. By changing your mind set to believing that you can find the time to exercise, you will easily incorporate it into your life.

Exercise is Boring Right?

Wrong!

Everyone enjoys different things in life and exercise is no different. One person might really enjoy 30 minutes on a treadmill in a gym whereas the next may prefer a long walk in the countryside. Whatever your preference, make sure it is something that you really do enjoy and you will find you look forward to exercise rather than dreading it.

Try to include family members or friends to make the time more enjoyable. Whatever you choose to do, ensure you keep it fun by varying it. You will feel more motivated by doing it this way especially when you begin to feel fitter and healthier as a result.

No Money for Exercise?

Exercising really need not be expensive. You do not need to purchase a gym membership or buy the latest fitness gadget. Unless you want to! Many people enjoy the gym and find that this really works for them which is great. But going to a gym is not necessary to lose weight and get fit.

To exercise all you need to do is engage in an activity that gets your body moving. This can include jogging, swimming, yoga, stretching and walking amongst many more free activities! The list really is endless.

No Energy to Exercise?

As we age, our bodies replace muscle with fat. This process results in feeling more tired and having less energy. The less energy you have the less you will feel like exercising, but it may surprise you to know that exercising will actually give you more energy. Lying around because you feel tired will only worsen your situation. It is a vicious cycle that you need to break. Start off with gentle exercise and build up to a level you feel happy with. Remember energy creates energy!

As a start towards doing more exercise sit down and draw up a structured plan that should encompass at least the following:-

- What is your current fitness level?
- What exercise do you enjoy?
- How fit do you want to become?
- What time can you set aside each day for exercise?
- What exercises will fit into the time available and also help you achieve your fitness level goal?

A structured exercise plan not only helps us to lose weight but to stave off many health problems that we may otherwise face, including heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, various cancers, depression, anxiety and in some cases premature death.

Start off with gradual changes, even a brisk walk to work counts towards your weekly quota. Taking the stairs instead of the lift, walking the dog that extra bit longer and going cycling instead of lying in on Sundays are great ways to slowly build up your fitness.

Other forms of great aerobic exercise are, jogging, housework and cycling.

Exercise really need not be an intense work-out, it can be as gentle as you like and can be built up into a routine that suits you and your life, slotting easily into your current timetable. And, in the same way exercise can be adapted to your daily life, it can also be adapted to suit any age, gender, and physical fitness level.

Remember if in doubt always consult a physician before beginning any exercise program.
