Cycling - What Are the Benefits?

I am off to buy a new bike today after my last one was 'borrowed' by an unknown party. So, I thought it would be a good time to talk about the benefits of cycling. I did not grow up with a bike, so for me cycling is not something that comes naturally at all. However, now that our roads are becoming safer and dedicated bike paths are much more common, there are some great reasons to get in the saddle...

1. Simple to get started

The great thing about cycling is that you can decide how much you want to invest. Unlike a gym or other fitness activities, there is no monthly fee or regular outgoings. There is a lot of equipment to choose from, but if you keep things simple you can get started for a very reasonable cost. My tips include buying a second hand bike or keeping an eye out for the end of season sales. You will find some great discounts this way.

Once you are committed to the sport, then you can decide what added extras you want to invest in. My favourite is the 'wedgie' so you can carry your keys, phone and cash all inside a little pocket that easily fits onto your bike frame.

2. An easy way to stay fit

Cycling is a really simple way to stay fit and delivers a range of health benefits. It helps improve your overall fitness which means that your heart is healthier. The use of your legs, bottom and abdominal muscles means that cycling helps improve your metabolism and increases muscle tone as well. It is relatively low impact which is good for your joints or managing aches and pains.

In my case, I have decided to start cycling because I have been pounding the pavement far too frequently and my Achilles tendon and knees cannot keep up any more. In order to remain active while my body recovers from general overuse, I am going to use the bike to strengthen my legs around my joints as well as introduce low impact activities into my routine.

3. Social activity with friends

Cycling can be a great social activity. Even serious riders manage to fit a bit of a chat in along the way. If you are looking for a healthy way to catch up with mates on a regular basis, consider getting a team together. That way you will have a chance to catch up and get fit along the way.

4. Fun for the kids

As our families expand, it can be hard to find ways to stay fit in amongst our other commitments. Riding a bike is a really fun activity for the kids and you get the benefit of exercising, keeping everyone entertained on the weekend. All you need are your bikes and a backpack with snacks and drinks.

5. Saves you time & money

Riding your bike can save you lots of money. Imagine if you used your bike for all those short trips that you would normally make in the car. You would easily clock up some kilometres without spending a cent on petrol, parking or public transport. If you are sick of spending hours stuck in traffic, consider looking at the best bike routes in your area. As you get fitter, you will find that during peak hour you can get to lots of places faster than you would by car.

As you can see, there are lots of great reasons to consider cycling as a way of maintaining your fitness. I personally am really looking forward to getting back into it today. If you have any suggestions on other benefits or getting the most out of cycling, then it would be great to hear from you.
